Viscose is actually a type of semi-synthetic fabric, created as a more affordable artificial alternative to silk. It is obtained by extracting cellulose fibers from trees such as pine, bamboo or eucalyptus, which are then converted into fabric yarns. This process is carried out by treating the cellulose with cellulose xanthate, a viscous liquid that undergoes various chemical processes to produce a fiber that mimics the qualities of natural fibers such as silk and cotton.
Although commonly referred to as rayon, viscose is actually a variant of rayon, as are modal and lyocell. These variants differ in the manufacturing process, as each is treated differently, resulting in fabrics with different properties. While viscose rayon is made from vegetable fibers, standard rayon is produced by dipping cellulose, without being extracted from vegetable fibers.
Viscose rayon has a long history, having first been created in 1883 as a cheaper alternative to silk. Since then, it has been widely used in the textile industry due to its softness to the touch and silk-like appearance.
Viscose fabric characteristics include its softness and comfort to the touch, as well as its ability to mimic the look of silk and the feel of cotton. It is a versatile material that can be used alone or blended with other fabrics, offering a luxurious look at an affordable price. In addition, viscose is hypoallergenic and breathable, making it ideal for a variety of garments, from T-shirts to sportswear.
As for care, viscose garments should be dry cleaned or hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent, as they tend to shrink easily when wet. In addition, it is important to avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, as this can damage its fibers.
