What is viscose, how is it produced, what are its characteristics and is it really a natural fabric?

Viscose is actually a type of semi-synthetic fabric, created as a more affordable artificial alternative to silk. It is obtained by extracting cellulose fibres from trees such as pine, bamboo or eucalyptus, which are then transformed into fabric threads. This process involves treating cellulose with cellulose xanthate, a viscous liquid that undergoes various chemical processes to produce a fiber that mimics the qualities of natural fibers such as silk and cotton.

Although commonly referred to as rayon, viscose is actually a variant of rayon, just like modal and lyocell. These variants differ in their manufacturing process, as each is processed differently, resulting in fabrics with different properties. While viscose is made from plant fibers, standard rayon is produced by soaking cellulose, without being extracted from plant fibers.

Viscose rayon has a long history, as it was created in 1883 to replace silk at a lower cost. Since then, it has been widely used in the textile industry due to its softness to the touch and silky appearance.
