What exactly is viscose? How is it produced and what are its characteristics? Is it really a natural fabric?

Viscose really is a type of semi-synthetic fabric, created as a more affordable artificial alternative to silk. It is obtained by extracting cellulose fibers from trees such as pine, bamboo or eucalyptus, which are then turned into fabric threads. This process is carried out by treating cellulose with cellulose xanthate, a viscous liquid that undergoes various chemical processes to produce a fiber that mimics the qualities of natural fibers such as silk and cotton.

Although commonly referred to as rayon, viscose is actually a variant of rayon, just like modal and lyocell. These variants differ in the manufacturing process, as each one is treated differently, resulting in fabrics with different properties. While viscose rayon is made from plant fibers, standard rayon is produced by dipping cellulose, without being extracted from plant fibers.

Viscose rayon has a long history, having first been created in 1883 as a cheaper alternative to silk. Since then, it has been widely used in the textile industry due to its softness to the touch and silk-like appearance.
